Norton Kent - Featured Artist at Capucines Boulevard

Capucines Boulevard Features Artist Norton Kent

about the artist

My art career began in mid-life in the 1980's about the time of the shuttle crash. I always said I could be an artist if I really wanted to and that crash got me thinking that time can fly and life is short.

Being self-taught I started painting whimsical works full of color. I always said if I didn't know the rules, I couldn't break them and so painting was fun and, at times, profitable.

By 1996, things changed. Divorced, having to go to work, and moving from Denver to Arkansas. It was time to become more serious. I had a lot of stories to tell.

artists' statement

In 1996 I started to put my memories, pains, loneliness and joys into my paintings. This is when I became known as the "woman behind the women", as I used the faces of women to tell a story.

I placed them in the dark to middle ages where some had power and most did not. You will not find smiles on these faces but you will see emotions that you can associate with.

I have reached most of my goals, learning each step at a time. My philosophy is that change is refreshing so I do alter my style and techniques a bit but never the subject.

I paint on canvas and boards with acrylic which I chose very early in my art. I use brushes and my hands from fingers to fist and let the paintings tell me what will emerge from beginning to end.

I consider myself an expressionist and I love every second of it.
