About the Artist

At the age of five I was diagnosed as being color blind. When asked by others how I am able to paint if I can't distinguish color, I simply answer. "I put a lot of trust and belief in my Muse that all will come out right." (I read the labels on the tubes of paint.)
I have studied fine arts in Northern California, Spain, Mexico, Central America and the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

Early in my career, I was influenced by the works of Van Gogh and Dali. My Later travels to Spain, where I studied Art History, exposed me to the styles of Goya, Carravagio, and Velasquez. I also admire the work of the English artist, William Turner.

A tenth generation New Mexican, my culture, family history, and religion have strongly influenced my present work. I currently live and work in Taos, New Mexico.

Artist's Statement
The extensive traveling I have done over the years has exposed me to varied cultures. I have a fascination for different peoples and their ways of life. Through my imagination and creativity, I've taken these experiences and put them on canvas, into sculpture and video work.

The themes in my work include Humanistic archetypal images grounded in a spiritual consciousness. I believe that light in a painting is always the most important element and I always try to convey a strong sense of it.

Having studied art history in Spain, I've been inspired to paint by artists such as Goya, Dali, Vasquez, Carravagio and Turner, the old masters like Van Gogh and Michaelangeo, and by life's experiences. Even the smell of oil paint excites me! My artistic oeuvre reflects a melding of a respect for history and mystical representation, with the challenges of the tendencies of evolving technologies.

I am motivated by a prescience of the challenges to the human spirit, and my desire to depict its inherent unboundedness. Sometimes what I create is beautiful and sometimes it isn't. I believe that an artists' creation of powerful emotion within his audience is a prerequisite to meaningful communication.
